Before Christmas...

Sunday we drove to Hyden – a 700 km return trip. We were to drive out to Wave Rock which I have not previously seen. The first stop was a dog cemetery near Corringal– basically in the middle of nowhere – where local farmers and families buried their beloved pets and working dogs. The tributes were lovely and the graves well kept – and it was obvious these dogs were LOVED. It was a scorching hot day so we continued to Wave Rock after a short stop.
We parked the car and followed the walking trail to the Hippo Yawn. It was now really, really HOT and there were a zillion flies. The Hippo’s yawn was a HUGE rock that resembled…guess what… a yawning hippopotamus! I spotted a couple of lizards on the rocks but you had to be PDQ to get a picture. We scrambled up the side of the rock just past the Hippo’s yawn and walked along the top of Wave Rock. It was windy so we had lost the flies en route. The top of Wave Rock has had a small wall mounted – to catch rain water into the dam. As there had been rain recently there was plenty of water in the dam. We came down the steps and walked under the rock formations which were very impressive. There are geological explanations for the phenomenon… but look it up on the web – it’s too complicated to explain here.
Next stop was the local shop and museum. There was some great stuff in the museum – especially noteworthy were pictures and letters from the original settlers – they did not have an easy time!!! We had lunch at a grotty little café :o) but there was nothing else so grotty little café it was :o) Food was fresh and good tho!
Monday was Christmas eve (24th). Shops were open until 6 pm – and they were STUFFED with people. You would think shops were closed for a week…but most shops opened again on the 26th – we have something to learn from that in Denmark! We took a ride out to Carol & Mike – they live on a farm not far from here. We saw their baby Alpaca – and their Mohair Goats. On the way home we could see that the Bush Fire had picked up and water bomber planes & helicopters were flying above. We had a turkey dinner and a quiet evening.
