We were up at 5 am. Although my Iphone and all weather reports had communicated good weather today I was really disappointed to see a cloudy sky on our first whole day in California. We discussed dogs (surprise) until we could go down for breakfast and then head off for Sea World.
We arrived just before 10 and after having some difficulties finding the parking we were at the front gates. Security into the park was a breeze ( the guy looked into my bag, saw my crocs and said "You have shoes in your bag. How bad can you be?" ) and we were in. We got hold of a map to plan our day and decided on four shows. The first was the Shamu training show with the killer whales - a show which basically explained how they trained the animals, rewards and motivation, and the history of the park. A really interesting show with a Q & A opportunity with a trainer at the end - we asked about some of their training techniques and a concept they called "pairing". The trainer also recommended that we also see one of the shows we had assumed was for kids.
The second show we saw was an upbeat Sea Lion and Otter Show based on popular prime time shows. The animals were well trained and performed difficult behaviours with ease.
The third show was a dolphin/bird show. This show had magnificent music and choregraphy - and told a story of a princess. There was more focus on the people performance in this show than in the others. There were different kinds of birds incorporated in this show - they flew from point to point in the arena in parts of the story. The dolphins were stunning and did beautiful moves to the music.
The fourth show we saw was the Pets Show. This show consisted mainly of pets rescued/adopted from shelters - cats, dogs, pigs, ostriches, a kangaroo etc. An impressive show with happy and well trained animals. The cats were RUNNING and a labrador performed an impressive chain of behaviours! We sat in the soak zone ( hey it was a kids show - how much water could there be ??? ) We got really WET :-D If you don't want to watch the whole clip - take the time to watch the labrador in the first sequence - he is wonderful. Unfortunately I didnt tape the first few parts of the chain - but most of it is on the video...
We rushed over for the final show to get good seats - The Shamu "Believe" Show. This was a well choreographed show which made us laugh, cry, smile and believe......
We left Sea World and drove south towards the Mexican border to do some Outlet Shopping at Las Americas. Our retail therapy didnt leave us broke :-D I got a coffee for the road and shortly after were pulled over by a not-so-happy police officer who thought it was more sensible we drove with lights on when it was dark.
